The almost dazed repetition of âbigâ here underlines the imagined threat of young black men supposedly invading the ânaturalisedâ tightness of the suspectsâ white superiority and the security of their physically embodied, masculine identities. Itâs the solidity and hardness of their embodied identities where the threat strikes most deeply. The suspectsâ grip on the physical solidity of who they think they are seems in danger of being eroded. And there is also the anxiety, eating away at their confidence, that these black men might actually be harder than them if it came to a fight. Perhaps thatâs why the suspects try and defend themselves through the abusive put-down shown by the repetition of âcuntâ and âniggerâ. They cover up their anxieties through effeminising (âcuntâ) the imagined black menace and also reducing black men to an inferior slave position (âniggerâ).
The hardness of their heterosexualised masculinities is also severely challenged by their fearful imaginings connected to the black, male bouncer look:
Charley Martin: âLike when you see him straight away you donât like the look of him.â
Neil Acourt: âHeâs a bouncer.â
Charley Martin: âNo this one he was a big cunt heâd all gold on him and everything.â
